What is Performing Arts?
The Performing Arts covers a broad spectrum of progression opportunities, including those in performance and non-performance based study. By working alongside the students and providing information on courses they may not have been aware of, we are able to assist students in selecting the very best options available to them.
Studying a Performance Arts subject at higher level is an extremely rewarding experience and those who follow this route are very attractive to future employers.

Previous success
We have excellent success rates of students gaining places at their first choice for Higher Education. Tallis Allumni have gone on to study at some of the UK’s top Arts establishments including Cambridge, Bristol, Manchester, Birmingham, Trinity Laban, Royal College of Music, The Guildhall school of Music and drama, Bristol of Vic, Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts, Rambert, The Place, Academy of Contemporary Music, and BIMM.
Specialist requirementsUniversities, colleges and conservatoires require an audition and/or interview process for performing courses, and for non-performance courses, a portfolio of work is often a requirement so it is important that you are aware of the specific requirements for your chosen Higher Education establishment. Preparation for specific requirements is key to success and at Tallis we have subject specialists in all areas of the Performing Arts who are on hand to assist with auditions, interviews and portfolios. The requirements for each college or university will be on their website, and the Performing Arts coordinator is available to advise and explain specific requirements.
Study at UniversityWhile there is always a practical element to performing Arts courses, Universities are often weighted on the academic side of learning and a student might learn about the history or the science behind a subject. Reading and research will play a large role. Unlike a Conservatoire or specialist college, a University will not be a specialist performing arts establishment but will cover many subjects which many students prefer.

Study at a Specialist College
These colleges specialise in one or multiple areas of the Performing Arts. Colleges such as Academy of Contemporary Music, Institute of Contemporary Music and Performance, East 15 Acting School, and Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts, fall into this category. A wide range of courses are on offer, not only in performance-based learning, but in more specialised areas such as Business, Marketing and Promotion, Events Management and Arts Journalism. Successful applicant will be taught by teachers who are professionals in their particular area.
Study at Conservatoire
Conservatoires such as Trinity Laban, Royal College of Music, The Guildhall School of Music and Drama, Bristol Old Vic, Birmingham Conservatoire, Rambert School of Ballet and Contemporary Dance specialise in one or multiple areas of the Performing Arts and are looking for an extremely high standard of performance ability from their applicants.
Foundation Course
Many Universities, specialist colleges and conservatoires will offer one year Foundation courses, with guaranteed acceptance onto an undergraduate program if the foundation year is completed successfully. Student finance is available for the fees for foundation years. Some Drama schools will often require a foundation year to build on theatre skills
Requirements for audition and interviewEach University, College or Conservatoire will have its own audition and interview requirements. It is important that you are aware of these and start your preparation early. Requirement may be an audition and interview, and interview and sample of your written work, or a portfolio in the case of music technology or sound design courses.
Music Technology PortfoliosThis is a requirement for music technology courses including sound engineering, sound design, and film music. The portfolio should contain at least 3 examples of the best work that the students has recorded, mixed, composed or performed. It should highlight strengths and skills as a musician and as a music technologist.

Application process
The application process is often through UCAS, although applications for conservatoires are through UCAS Conservatoires (CUKAS). Other colleges such as The Guildhall School of Music and Drama have their own application process which need to be completed via the colleges website.
